We realize that visiting the orthodontist can sometimes be a nerve-wracking experience. That’s why at Goodman Orthodontics, we’re proud to go above and beyond to make sure that you always feel comfortable and well-informed. We’re not simply providers of effective children’s and adult orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign – we aim to be your educators as well. As your orthodontist in and around Riverdale, Manhattan, and New York City, we’d like to provide you with a list of frequently asked questions and answers about Invisalign, also known as the clear braces treatment.

While Invisalign was once only meant to treat minor orthodontic conditions, advances in technology have also allowed Invisalign to treat a plethora of orthodontic problems, including crossbites, overbites, crowding, and spacing issues.

The treatment time can vary greatly depending on the patient and the severity of the orthodontic situation. However, the treatment time will generally last from six to 18 months, shorter than the typical treatment with traditional braces.

You’ll need to wear your aligners for about 22 hours a day. You’ll be able to take them out for eating, cleaning your teeth, or any special occasions.

There might be some minor pressure or discomfort after each initial insertion. This isn’t anything to worry about though – this is just a sign that your teeth are gradually shifting toward their desired location.

Since you remove your aligners before you eat, there are absolutely no restrictions on what you can eat. Just make sure to clean your aligners before putting them back in though.

To keep them clean, we recommend brushing them with toothpaste in the same way you’d brush your teeth. Rinse them with lukewarm water afterward.

Just like with any other orthodontic treatment, there will usually be a short adjustment period where your speech may be slightly affected. However, the more you speak with them in, the quicker you’ll adjust to them.

We highly discourage it as smoking can discolor and warp the aligners. If you must smoke, please make sure to take the aligners out beforehand.

Like with smoking, we recommend taking your aligners out if you’re going to do so. Gum can get stuck in your aligners.

While it depends on the patient’s orthodontic situation, you’ll likely need to come in to see us once every eight weeks. Visiting us will ensure that your treatment is progressing just as planned.

Just like with other forms of orthodontic treatment, you’ll be required to wear retainers afterward. However, the great thing about Invisalign is that you won’t need to get a new retainer – you can just use the last set of aligners as your retainer.

As long as all their teeth, including their second molars, have grown in, kids can use Invisalign. There’s even a special type of Invisalign for kids, which is known as Invisalign Teen.

The cost will vary from patient to patient since it depends on the situation and the treatment time. While Invisalign is slightly more expensive than braces for the same amount of treatment time, Invisalign is typically quicker so the costs will usually even out.
